(a) Green revolution: This refers to the dramatic increase in food-grain production, especially wheat and rice, that took place in India during the 1960s–70s. It was achieved through the introduction of high-yielding variety (HYV) seeds, improved irrigation facilities, greater use of fertilizers and pesticides, and better agricultural practices — led by scientists such as Dr. M.S. Swaminathan in India (building on Norman Borlaug's HYV wheat work). It made India largely self-sufficient in food-grain production.
