Cry proteins are Bt-derived crystal toxin proteins used to confer insect resistance in genetically modified crops.

Cry proteins ('crystal proteins') are a family of insecticidal proteins produced by certain strains of the soil bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) in the form of crystals during a particular phase of their growth. Each type of cry protein (e.g. cryIAc, cryIIAb, cryIAb) is toxic to a specific group of insects (such as lepidopterans, coleopterans or dipterans) — the toxin binds to specific receptors on the insect gut epithelium, causing the cells to swell and lyse, killing the larva, while it is harmless to non-target organisms including humans.
