Exonuclease cuts from DNA ends (no specific site); endonuclease cuts internally (restriction types recognise specific sequences). OR: GM crops resist stresses, cut pesticide use, and reduce losses/boost nutrition.

Concept: Nucleases cleave phosphodiester bonds in nucleic acids; they are of two kinds based on the site of action.

Three differences (Exonuclease vs Endonuclease):

  1. Site of action: exonuclease acts at the terminal ends of a DNA strand; endonuclease acts at internal (specific) sites within the DNA.
  2. Mode of cutting: exonuclease removes nucleotides one by one from the ends; endonuclease cleaves the strand at specific points in the interior.
  3. Specificity: exonucleases generally do not recognise a specific sequence; many endonucleases (restriction enzymes) recognise specific palindromic base sequences before cutting, which makes them important in genetic engineering.

OR — Three reasons to adopt GM crops:

  1. They are more tolerant to abiotic stresses — cold, drought, salt and heat — so they can grow where ordinary crops fail. …
