The Hardy-Weinberg Principle states that a population's gene pool remains constant unless acted upon by evolutionary forces.

The Hardy-Weinberg Principle states that allele frequencies (and hence genotype frequencies) in a population remain constant, generation after generation, i.e., the gene pool of the population remains in equilibrium/conserved — provided the population is sufficiently large, mating is random, and no evolutionary forces (mutation, gene flow/migration, genetic drift, natural selection) act upon it.

Mathematically, for a gene locus with two alleles, A (with frequency p) and a (with frequency q), such that p + q = 1, the expected genotype frequencies at equilibrium are given by the binomial expansion: p²(AA) + 2pq(Aa) + q²(aa) = 1.
