Biofertiliser microbes enrich soil nutrients: Rhizobium (N-fixing symbiont in legume nodules), Azotobacter/Azospirillum (free-living N-fixers), cyanobacteria Anabaena/Nostoc (N-fixers in paddy) and mycorrhiza (Glomus) (absorb phosphorus, minerals and water) — a cheap, pollution-free alternative to chemical fertilisers.

Concept

Biofertilisers are living organisms (bacteria, fungi and cyanobacteria) that enrich the nutrient quality of the soil, chiefly by fixing atmospheric nitrogen or by mobilising minerals for the plant. They reduce dependence on chemical fertilisers, which are costly and pollute soil and water.

Uses / examples

  1. Bacteria — symbiotic nitrogen fixers: Rhizobium lives in the root nodules of leguminous plants (pea, gram, beans) and fixes atmospheric N2N_2 into nitrogenous compounds the plant can use.
  2. Bacteria — free-living nitrogen fixers: Azotobacter and Azospirillum live freely in the soil and fix nitrogen, enriching it.
  3. Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae): Anabaena, Nostoc, Oscillatoria fix atmospheric nitrogen and add organic matter; they are especially important in paddy (rice) fields. Anabaena also lives in the leaf cavities of the water-fern Azolla, used as a biofertiliser. …
