In desert plants the leaves are reduced to spines — option (i) — an adaptation that reduces water loss.

Concept

Deserts are hot and arid, so plants growing there (xerophytes) show adaptations that conserve water. A leaf has a large surface area and many stomata, which makes it a major site of water loss through transpiration. Reducing the leaf therefore protects the plant against desiccation.

Why spines

  • Reducing leaves to spines drastically lowers the transpiring surface area.
  • Photosynthesis is taken over by the flattened, green, fleshy stem (phylloclade), e.g. in Opuntia.
  • Spines additionally protect the plant from grazing herbivores. …
