MTP is the legal, medically-supervised termination of a pregnancy before full term (legalised in India, 1971). It helps women end unwanted/unsafe pregnancies but is dangerously misused for illegal female foeticide.

Concept

Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP), or induced abortion, is the deliberate ending of a pregnancy before the foetus becomes viable. India legalised MTP through the MTP Act, 1971 (with later amendments) to permit safe abortions and to reduce the deaths caused by unsafe, illegal abortions. MTPs are considered relatively safe in the first trimester (up to 12 weeks); second-trimester procedures carry more risk and need stricter conditions.

Why it is done

It is advised when continuing the pregnancy is harmful to the mother or foetus, when the pregnancy results from rape or contraceptive failure, or in cases of a seriously abnormal foetus.
