Microsporogenesis: microspore mother cells (2n2n) in the anther's pollen sacs undergo meiosis → microspore tetrad (nn) → pollen grains. Draw the sequence: anther T.S. → microsporangium → sporogenous tissue → MMC → tetrad → mature pollen grain (exine, intine, vegetative + generative cells).

Concept

Microsporogenesis is the process of formation of microspores (which mature into pollen grains) from a microspore mother cell by meiosis, occurring inside the anther of the stamen. Pollen grains are the young male gametophytes.

Structure of the anther (to draw)

  • A typical anther is bilobed and tetrasporangiate — it has four microsporangia (pollen sacs), two in each lobe.
  • Each microsporangium is surrounded by four wall layers — epidermis, endothecium, middle layers, and the innermost nutritive tapetum — and is filled with sporogenous tissue in the centre.

Steps of microsporogenesis (label these in the diagram)

  1. The cells of the sporogenous tissue enlarge to become microspore mother cells (MMCs) / pollen mother cells, each diploid (2n2n).
  2. Each MMC undergoes meiosis (a reduction division), producing four haploid (nn) cells arranged as a microspore tetrad.
  3. As the anther matures, the microspores dissociate from one another and develop into pollen grains.
  4. A mature pollen grain has a two-layered wall — the tough, ornamented outer exine (of sporopollenin, with germ pores) and the thin inner intine — and encloses two cells: a large vegetative (tube) cell with abundant food, and a small generative cell (which later divides to form two male gametes). …
