Sodium phenoxide + CO2 under heat/pressure gives salicylic acid (Kolbe), or anisole + CH3COCl/AlCl3 gives p-methoxyacetophenone (Friedel-Crafts).

Kolbe's reaction:

Sodium phenoxide is treated with CO2CO_2 at about 400 K and 4–7 atm pressure; the electrophilic carbon of CO2CO_2 is attacked by the ortho carbon of the phenoxide ring (which has high electron density due to resonance), followed by acidification:

C6H5ONa+CO2→4−7 atm400 K  o-C6H4(OH)COONa→H3O+o-C6H4(OH)COOHC_6H_5ONa + CO_2 \xrightarrow[4-7\,atm]{400\,K} \;o\text{-}C_6H_4(OH)COONa \xrightarrow{H_3O^+} o\text{-}C_6H_4(OH)COOH

The product is salicylic acid (2-hydroxybenzoic acid).
