Soaps are fatty-acid salts that fail in hard water; synthetic detergents are sulphonate/sulphate salts that work even in hard water.

Soap: Sodium or potassium salts of long-chain fatty acids (e.g. sodium stearate, C17H35COONaC_{17}H_{35}COONa), prepared by saponification of natural fats/oils. Soaps are biodegradable. In hard water (containing Ca2+Ca^{2+}/Mg2+Mg^{2+} ions), soaps form an insoluble precipitate (scum), reducing their cleansing action.
