Three named reduction/oxidative-cleavage reactions of carbonyl chemistry, or three direct conversions using standard reagents.

  1. Stephen Reaction: A nitrile is reduced to an aldehyde. The nitrile is treated with SnCl2SnCl_2 and HClHCl (gas) to give an imine-stannic chloride complex, which is then hydrolysed: RC≡N+SnCl2/HCl→RCH=NH⋅HCl→H3O+RCHO+NH4ClRC\equiv N + SnCl_2/HCl \to RCH=NH\cdot HCl \xrightarrow{H_3O^+} RCHO + NH_4Cl
  2. Haloform reaction: Methyl ketones (or acetaldehyde / ethanol-type compounds) react with a halogen (X2X_2) in the presence of NaOHNaOH to give a haloform (e.g. iodoform) and the sodium salt of a carboxylic acid with one fewer carbon: CH3CHO+3I2+4NaOH→CHI3↓+HCOONa+3NaI+3H2OCH_3CHO + 3I_2 + 4NaOH \to CHI_3\downarrow + HCOONa + 3NaI + 3H_2O
  3. Clemmensen reduction: The carbonyl group of an aldehyde or ketone is reduced completely to a −CH2−-CH_2- group, using zinc amalgam and concentrated hydrochloric acid: R2C=O+4[H]→Zn(Hg)/conc. HClR2CH2+H2OR_2C=O + 4[H] \xrightarrow{Zn(Hg)/conc.\ HCl} R_2CH_2 + H_2O

OR — Conversions:

(a) Toluene → Benzaldehyde (Etard reaction):

C6H5CH3→(ii) H3O+(i) CrO2Cl2, CS2C6H5CHOC_6H_5CH_3 \xrightarrow[\text{(ii) }H_3O^+]{\text{(i) }CrO_2Cl_2,\ CS_2} C_6H_5CHO
