Diazotisation = converting a primary aromatic amine to a diazonium salt using nitrous acid at 0−-5 ∘^\circC.

Concept. Nitrous acid (generated in situ from NaNO2_2 and a mineral acid such as HCl) reacts with a primary aromatic amine to give a benzenediazonium salt. The low temperature (0−5 ∘0-5\,^\circC) is essential because diazonium salts decompose on warming.

Reaction.

C6H5NH2+NaNO2+2HCl→273−278 KC6H5N2+Cl−+NaCl+2H2OC_6H_5NH_2 + NaNO_2 + 2HCl \xrightarrow{273-278\,K} C_6H_5N_2^+Cl^- + NaCl + 2H_2O
