An empirical ligand ranking by their ability to split d-orbital energies; the split's size decides high-spin vs low-spin behaviour.

Spectrochemical series: an experimentally determined arrangement of common ligands in order of increasing crystal field splitting energy (Δo\Delta_o) they produce on a central metal ion:

I−<Br−<SCN−<Cl−<S2−<F−<OH−<C2O42−<H2O<NCS−<edta4−<NH3<en<CN−<COI^- < Br^- < SCN^- < Cl^- < S^{2-} < F^- < OH^- < C_2O_4^{2-} < H_2O < NCS^- < edta^{4-} < NH_3 < en < CN^- < CO

Weak field ligands (e.g. I−I^-, Br−Br^-, Cl−Cl^-, F−F^-, H2OH_2O) are on the low-Δ\Delta end of the series. They cause only a small splitting between the t2gt_{2g} and e_g} d-orbitals, so electrons prefer to occupy all five d-orbitals singly first (Hund's rule) rather than pair up — giving high-spin complexes with a maximum number of unpaired electrons.
