(a) Homoleptic = one kind of ligand; heteroleptic = more than one kind. (b) A double salt dissociates fully into all its ions in water; a complex keeps its complex ion intact. (c) Inner-orbital complexes use inner (n−1)d(n{-}1)d orbitals (d2sp3d^2sp^3, low spin); outer-orbital use outer ndnd orbitals (sp3d2sp^3d^2, high spin).

(a) Homoleptic vs heteroleptic complexes.

  • Homoleptic: the metal is bound to only one kind of ligand. Example: [Co(NH3)6]3+[\text{Co(NH}_3)_6]^{3+}, [Fe(CN)6]4−[\text{Fe(CN)}_6]^{4-}.
  • Heteroleptic: the metal is bound to more than one kind of ligand. Example: [Co(NH3)4Cl2]+[\text{Co(NH}_3)_4\text{Cl}_2]^{+}.

(b) Double salt vs complex.

  • Double salt: exists only in the solid state; in water it dissociates completely into all its constituent simple ions and loses its identity. Example: Mohr's salt FeSO4⋅(NH4)2SO4⋅6H2O\text{FeSO}_4\cdot(\text{NH}_4)_2\text{SO}_4\cdot6\text{H}_2\text{O} (gives Fe2+,NH4+,SO42−\text{Fe}^{2+}, \text{NH}_4^{+}, \text{SO}_4^{2-}), or potash alum.
  • Complex (coordination compound): in water it does not dissociate completely; the complex ion retains its identity and the metal is not free. Example: K4[Fe(CN)6]\text{K}_4[\text{Fe(CN)}_6] gives K+\text{K}^{+} and the intact complex ion [Fe(CN)6]4−[\text{Fe(CN)}_6]^{4-} (does not give free Fe2+\text{Fe}^{2+} or CN−\text{CN}^{-}).

(c) Inner-orbital vs outer-orbital complexes.

  • Inner-orbital (low-spin): the metal uses inner (n−1)d(n{-}1)d orbitals for hybridisation, giving d2sp3d^2sp^3 hybridisation; formed with strong-field ligands; usually low-spin (fewer unpaired electrons). Example: [Co(NH3)6]3+[\text{Co(NH}_3)_6]^{3+}.
  • Outer-orbital (high-spin): the metal uses outer ndnd orbitals, giving sp3d2sp^3d^2 hybridisation; formed with weak-field ligands; high-spin (more unpaired electrons). Example: [CoF6]3−[\text{CoF}_6]^{3-}. …
