Chloroform is oxidised by air/light to poisonous phosgene, 2CHCl3+O2→light2COCl2+2HCl2CHCl_3 + O_2 \xrightarrow{light} 2COCl_2 + 2HCl; dark, completely-filled bottles keep out light and air.

Concept. In the presence of light and air (oxygen), chloroform undergoes slow oxidation to form phosgene (carbonyl chloride, COCl2_2), which is extremely poisonous.

Reaction.

2CHCl3+O2→sunlight2COCl2+2HCl2CHCl_3 + O_2 \xrightarrow{\text{sunlight}} 2COCl_2 + 2HCl

Precautions explained.

  • The bottle is completely filled so that no air (oxygen) is left inside to oxidise the chloroform.
  • Dark-coloured bottles cut off light, which is needed for the oxidation. …
