(a) A racemic mixture is a 1:1 mixture of enantiomers and is optically inactive. (b) Freons are chlorofluorocarbons used as refrigerants/propellants. (c) A stereocentre is an atom at which exchanging two groups produces a stereoisomer.

(a) Racemic mixture. An equimolar (50:50) mixture of the two enantiomers — the dextrorotatory (d/+d/+) and laevorotatory (l/−l/-) forms — of a chiral compound. It is optically inactive because the rotation caused by one enantiomer is exactly cancelled by the equal-and-opposite rotation of the other (external compensation). Denoted by the prefix (±)(\pm) or dl. Example: (±)(\pm)-butan-2-ol.

(b) Freons. These are chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) — fully halogenated derivatives of methane and ethane, e.g. dichlorodifluoromethane CF2Cl2\text{CF}_2\text{Cl}_2 (Freon-12). They are stable, non-toxic, non-flammable gases used as refrigerants, aerosol propellants and blowing agents. In the stratosphere they release chlorine radicals that catalytically destroy ozone, so their use is now restricted.
