Formula = PQ; coordination number of P = 8 and of Q = 8. (OR — primitive vs centred unit cell explained below.)

Concept. An atom at a corner of a cube is shared by 8 unit cells, contributing 18\tfrac18; an atom at the body-centre belongs entirely to that cell, contributing 1.

Calculation (main question).

  • Q at 8 corners: 8×18=18 \times \tfrac18 = 1 atom of Q.
  • P at body-centre: 1×1=11 \times 1 = 1 atom of P.

Ratio P : Q =1:1= 1 : 1, so the formula is PQ. This is a body-centred type arrangement, in which each body-centre atom is surrounded by 8 corner atoms and vice versa, so the coordination number of both P and Q is 8.

OR — Primitive vs centred unit cell.

  • Primitive (simple) unit cell: constituent particles are present only at the corners of the unit cell. Net contribution =8×18=1= 8 \times \tfrac18 = 1 particle per cell.
  • Centred unit cell: particles are present at the corners and at additional positions: …
