Schottky = missing cation−-anion pair (density decreases); Frenkel = ion displaced to an interstitial site (density unchanged).

Concept. Ionic crystals show point defects that keep the crystal electrically neutral overall.

(k) Schottky defect. An equal number of cations and anions are missing from their normal lattice sites, leaving vacancies. Because ions are actually absent, the density of the solid decreases. It is shown by ionic solids with high coordination number and similar cation/anion sizes, e.g. NaCl, KCl, CsCl.
