- In a crystalline solid, the constituent particles (atoms, ions or molecules) are arranged in a highly ordered, repetitive three-dimensional pattern. Each such position occupied by a particle in this array is called a lattice point (or lattice site). When these points are joined by straight lines, they reveal the geometry of the crystal lattice - the regular three-dimensional arrangement of these points in space.
