Schottky defect = a stoichiometric pair of ions (one cation + one anion) missing entirely from the lattice (density decreases). Frenkel defect = an ion displaced from its lattice site into an interstitial site (density unchanged).

Both are point defects found in ionic crystalline solids.

Schottky defect: This arises when an equal number of cations and anions are missing from their respective normal lattice sites, so that electrical neutrality of the crystal is maintained. Because particles are actually missing from the structure (not merely relocated), the overall mass of the crystal decreases while its volume stays essentially the same, so the density of the solid decreases. Schottky defects are commonly observed in ionic compounds where the cation and anion have similar ionic sizes and a comparatively high coordination number, for example NaCl, KCl, KBr and CsCl.
