Field lines picture a magnetic field; their tangent gives B⃗\vec B's direction, they form closed loops, and they never cross.

Definition. A magnetic field line is an imaginary curve drawn in a magnetic field such that the tangent to it at any point gives the direction of the magnetic field B⃗\vec B at that point. Equivalently, it is the path a free, isolated north pole would follow. The closeness of the lines represents the field's strength (denser lines ⇒ stronger field).

Two properties.

  1. They form continuous closed loops. Outside a magnet the lines run from the north pole to the south pole, and inside the magnet they continue from south to north, closing on themselves. This reflects the fact that isolated magnetic poles (monopoles) do not exist. …
