A shunt (parallel, low R) makes an ammeter; a series multiplier (high R) makes a voltmeter.

Galvanometer to Ammeter: A galvanometer of resistance GG that gives full-scale deflection for current IgI_g is converted into an ammeter of range II by connecting a small resistance SS (called a shunt) in parallel with the galvanometer. The shunt diverts most of the current, so only IgI_g passes through the galvanometer. Using IgG=(I−Ig)SI_gG = (I-I_g)S:

S=IgGI−IgS = \dfrac{I_gG}{I-I_g}

The combination has very low net resistance, so an ammeter is connected in series in the circuit without appreciably changing the current.

Galvanometer to Voltmeter: The same galvanometer is converted into a voltmeter of range VV by connecting a large resistance RR in series with it. Since the current through the galvanometer must still be IgI_g for full-scale deflection:
