A moving coil galvanometer works on the principle that a current-carrying coil placed in a magnetic field experiences a torque proportional to the current; this torque is balanced by a restoring spring torque, giving a deflection proportional to the current.

Principle: When a current-carrying rectangular coil is placed in a uniform magnetic field, it experiences a torque given by τ=NIABsin⁡ϕ\tau = NIAB\sin\phi, where NN is the number of turns, II the current, AA the area of the coil, BB the magnetic field, and ϕ\phi the angle between the plane of the coil and the field. By using radial pole pieces (concave poles) with a soft-iron cylindrical core at the centre, the field is made radial, so the plane of the coil always remains parallel to B⃗\vec B (ϕ=90∘\phi = 90^\circ always), giving a constant deflecting torque τ=NIAB\tau = NIAB for any orientation of the coil, and hence a uniform (linear) scale.

Construction: A rectangular coil of many turns of fine insulated copper wire is wound on a light aluminium frame and suspended (or pivoted) between the pole pieces of a strong permanent horse-shoe magnet, with a soft-iron cylindrical core inside the coil to concentrate and make the field radial. The coil is held by two hairsprings (or a phosphor-bronze suspension), which also serve to lead current in and out and to provide a restoring torque. A pointer (or a small mirror, in sensitive galvanometers) attached to the coil indicates the deflection on a calibrated scale.
