A contingent liability is a possible obligation that depends on the happening of an uncertain future event; it is only disclosed as a note to the accounts.

A contingent liability is not a liability that definitely exists on the Balance Sheet date. It is a potential obligation that will crystallise into an actual liability only if a particular uncertain future event occurs. Because its occurrence and amount are uncertain, it is not recorded in the books nor included in the Balance Sheet totals; instead it is disclosed by way of a footnote so that users are aware of the possible obligation.
