Soil pollution builds up mainly from two sources. Pesticides, especially older chlorinated

organic compounds such as DDT, are described as persistent because their carbon-chlorine bonds

resist normal microbial and chemical breakdown, so they remain intact in soil for years or decades

rather than degrading. This persistence drives bioaccumulation -- a fat-soluble, poorly excreted

pesticide builds up in an exposed organism's tissue faster than it can be eliminated -- and

biomagnification, where predators accumulate the combined pesticide burden of the many

contaminated organisms they eat, compounding the effect at each step up a food chain, so a top

predator can carry pesticide concentrations far higher than were ever present in the original soil.
