DBMS functions include data storage/retrieval, integrity and security, concurrency control, and backup/recovery; its main elements are hardware, software, data, users and procedures. OR - Forms are data-entry/display screens; Macros automate repetitive actions.

Four functions of DBMS:

  1. Data storage and retrieval - it stores large volumes of data in an organised way and lets users add, update, delete and quickly retrieve data through queries.
  2. Data integrity and security - it enforces rules/constraints so data stays accurate and consistent, and controls access through passwords and user rights.
  3. Concurrency control (multi-user access) - it allows many users to work on the database at the same time without conflicts or loss of data.
  4. Backup and recovery - it provides facilities to back up data and to recover it after a failure, protecting against data loss. (Other functions: data definition, and reducing data redundancy.)

Main elements of DBMS:

The main elements are Hardware (computers, storage), Software (the DBMS program itself and the operating system), Data (the actual stored data and metadata), Users (database administrators, programmers and end-users) and Procedures (the rules and instructions for using the system).
