Taylor's scientific management uses techniques like functional foremanship, standardisation and simplification, work study, and the differential piece-wage system to replace guesswork with science and raise productivity.

F.W. Taylor, the father of scientific management, suggested techniques to carry out work in 'one best way'. Four important techniques are described below.

1. Functional Foremanship

Taylor proposed dividing factory supervision among eight specialised foremen — four on the planning side (route clerk, instruction card clerk, time-and-cost clerk, disciplinarian) and four on the doing side (speed boss, gang boss, repair boss, inspector). Each worker thus receives expert guidance in each function.

2. Standardisation and Simplification of Work

Standardisation fixes norms for materials, tools, equipment, methods and working conditions, while simplification removes unnecessary varieties and sizes of products. Together they reduce wastage, cut costs and ensure uniform quality.

3. Work Study (Method, Motion, Time and Fatigue Study)

Work study scientifically analyses jobs — method study finds the best way of doing a task, motion study eliminates wasteful movements, time study fixes the standard time for a task, and fatigue study decides rest intervals. This determines a fair day's work.

4. Differential Piece-Wage System …
