Own price elasticity of demand is the percentage responsiveness of quantity demanded of a good to a percentage change in its own price.

Definition

Own price elasticity of demand (ep) of a good is defined as the ratio of the proportionate (percentage) change in the quantity demanded of that good to the proportionate (percentage) change in its own price, all other determinants of demand (income, tastes, prices of related goods) held constant.

ep = (% change in quantity demanded of X) / (% change in price of X)

= (ΔQ/Q) / (ΔP/P) = (ΔQ/ΔP) × (P/Q)
