Firm equilibrium: MR = MC (necessary) and MC rising/cutting MR from below (sufficient) — since AR=MR=Price here, this becomes Price = MC. (Or) Market price is determined where aggregate demand meets aggregate supply.

Necessary and sufficient conditions for short-run equilibrium of a perfectly competitive firm (2 marks): (i) Necessary (first-order) condition: Marginal Revenue must equal Marginal Cost (MR = MC). (ii) Sufficient (second-order) condition: the Marginal Cost curve must cut the Marginal Revenue curve from below, i.e. MC must be rising (not falling) at the point of equality — this ensures the point is a profit maximum, not a profit minimum.

How the firm attains equilibrium (3 marks): Since a perfectly competitive firm is a price-taker, its Average Revenue (AR) and Marginal Revenue (MR) curves coincide as a single horizontal line equal to the market price. The firm keeps expanding output as long as MR exceeds MC (each extra unit adds more revenue than cost); once MC rises to equal MR, expanding further would cost more than it earns, so output stops there. This output, where the rising MC curve cuts the horizontal Price = MR line from below, is the firm's short-run equilibrium output, yielding maximum profit (or minimum loss).
