The Lorenz curve's distance from the diagonal measures inequality; the standard deviation of the given family-size data comes out to exactly 0.5.

Properties of the Lorenz curve. The Lorenz curve is drawn in a square diagram with the cumulative percentage of population plotted on the X-axis and the cumulative percentage of income (or wealth) on the Y-axis, both running from 0 to 100.

  • The diagonal line (from the origin to the top-right corner) is the 'line of perfect equality' — it shows what the distribution would look like if every X% of the population always earned exactly X% of total income.
  • The actual Lorenz curve for any real economy lies ON or BELOW this diagonal (it is convex toward the horizontal axis / sags below the diagonal), because in practice the poorer sections of the population always hold a smaller share of income than their population share.
  • The greater the area/gap between the Lorenz curve and the diagonal, the greater the inequality of income distribution; a curve bulging very close to the bottom and right-hand edges of the square indicates extreme inequality, while a curve very close to the diagonal indicates near-equal distribution.
  • In the extreme (theoretical) case of complete equality, the Lorenz curve coincides exactly with the diagonal; in the extreme case of total inequality (one person holding all income), the curve would run along the bottom and right-hand edges of the square. …
