Range is the difference between the largest and the smallest value in a set of observations. While simple to compute, it suffers from real limitations as a measure of dispersion: (i) Based only on extreme values - range uses only the maximum and the minimum observation; it completely disregards the values that lie between them, so two very different distributions can have the same range if their extremes happen to match, even though one may be tightly clustered and the other widely scattered.
