Main stem -- The value-added method of measuring national income: This method (also called the product method or output method) views the economy as made up of many production units across the primary (agriculture, mining), secondary (manufacturing, construction) and tertiary (services) sectors, and computes national income by adding up the VALUE ADDED by each of them, rather than simply adding up the gross value of everything produced (which would count the same value multiple times as it passes through successive stages).
Steps:
- Identify all producing enterprises/establishments in the economy and classify them by sector.
- For each unit, compute Gross Value of Output (quantity x market price).
- Subtract the value of Intermediate Consumption (the value of goods/services purchased from OTHER firms and used up in production, e.g. raw materials bought from another firm) to arrive at Gross Value Added (GVA) = Output - Intermediate Consumption. This step is what avoids double counting, because inputs bought from another domestic firm have already been counted as that firm's own output.
- Sum GVA across all production units in the economy to get GDP at market price.
- Adjust further -- subtract depreciation (to get NDP), add net factor income from abroad (to move from domestic to national product, e.g. GNP/NNP), and adjust for net indirect taxes (to move from market price to factor cost) -- to arrive at National Income (NNP at factor cost). …
