Perfect competition is defined by a large number of buyers/sellers, a homogeneous product, free entry/exit, perfect information, and perfect factor mobility; a perfectly competitive firm's short-run supply curve is the portion of its rising MC curve lying above the minimum point of its average variable cost curve.

Main stem -- Five characteristics of a perfectly competitive market:

  1. Large number of buyers and sellers -- each so small relative to the total market that no individual can influence the price; everyone is a 'price taker'.
  2. Homogeneous (identical) product -- the output of every seller is a perfect substitute for every other seller's output, so there is no basis to prefer one seller's good over another's except price.
  3. Free entry and exit -- firms can enter the industry when profits are attractive, or leave when it becomes unprofitable, with no artificial barriers.
  4. Perfect knowledge/information -- buyers and sellers have complete, costless information about prices and products prevailing in the market, which rules out price discrimination.
  5. Perfect mobility of factors of production -- resources (labour, capital) can move freely between uses/firms in response to price/return differentials, so that no firm earns persistently abnormal returns on any factor.

(A single price for the whole market -- the 'law of one price' -- follows from, rather than being a separate independent assumption of, these characteristics.)
