Shape-selective catalysis is catalysis controlled by the pore geometry of the catalyst, which physically restricts which molecules can access the active sites.

Zeolites are microporous, cage-like aluminosilicate solids with a honeycomb-like internal structure of uniform pore size. Because reactant and product molecules must fit through these pores to reach the catalytically active sites (or to leave after reacting), only molecules of a particular size and shape can be converted — larger or differently shaped molecules are excluded. This property, called shape selectivity, allows zeolites to control which products form and in what proportions.
