The IOC leads the Olympic Movement; NOCs represent it in each country, IFs govern each sport, and organising committees and other members complete a single coordinated structure.

The Olympic Movement is the worldwide network of organisations and people acting under the leadership of the IOC and inspired by the values of Olympism. Its three main pillars fit together as follows:

1. International Olympic Committee (IOC) — the supreme authority of the Movement. It owns the rights to the Olympic Games and the Olympic symbols, selects the host cities, and guides, coordinates and protects the whole Movement. It recognises the NOCs and IFs and upholds the Olympic Charter.

2. National Olympic Committees (NOCs) — each country's governing body for the Olympic Movement. An NOC (such as the Indian Olympic Association for India) develops and promotes Olympism at home, coordinates the national federations, and selects and enters its country's athletes for the Games.

3. International Federations (IFs) — the world governing bodies of individual sports (e.g. FIFA, World Athletics). Each IF makes and enforces the rules of its sport worldwide and ensures its technical organisation at the Games.

4. Other members — the Organising Committees for the Olympic Games (OCOGs) that stage each edition, together with athletes, national federations, clubs and other bodies recognised by the IOC. …
