While physiological changes (shifting levels of the plant's own growth-regulating signals as a leaf ages) set abscission in motion, the leaf can only actually detach because of a specific anatomical structure prepared for exactly this purpose at the base of the petiole.
- As a leaf approaches the end of its life, a narrow band of cells at the base of the petiole becomes anatomically distinct from the tissue around it — this is the abscission zone.
