Increasing and Decreasing Functions (Monotonic Functions)

A function's derivative doesn't just give the slope at a point — it also tells you whether the function is climbing or falling as xx increases, which is the idea of monotonicity.

A real function y=f(x)y = f(x) is called increasing on an open interval (a,b)(a, b) if the value of ff increases as xx increases — graphically, the curve rises as you move from left to right. The interval (a,b)(a,b) here can be a bounded interval between two real numbers, or an unbounded one such as (a,∞)(a, \infty), (−∞,b)(-\infty, b), or all of R=(−∞,∞)\mathbb{R} = (-\infty,\infty). Analytically, ff is increasing on (a,b)(a,b) if, for every pair of points x1,x2∈(a,b)x_1, x_2 \in (a,b),

x1<x2  ⟹  f(x1)<f(x2)x_1 < x_2 \implies f(x_1) < f(x_2) (equivalently, x1>x2  ⟹  f(x1)>f(x2)x_1 > x_2 \implies f(x_1) > f(x_2))

A function is decreasing on (a,b)(a,b) if instead the value of ff falls as xx increases — the curve falls left to right — which analytically means

x1<x2  ⟹  f(x1)>f(x2)x_1 < x_2 \implies f(x_1) > f(x_2) (equivalently, x1>x2  ⟹  f(x1)<f(x2)x_1 > x_2 \implies f(x_1) < f(x_2)) …
