Meaning
Money is anything that is generally accepted as a medium of exchange and a measure of value. Over time it has taken several forms, which can be distinguished as follows.
Distinction between types of money
| Type | Nature |
|---|---|
| Metallic money | Money made of metals such as gold, silver and copper, that is, coins. |
| Paper money | Currency notes issued by the central bank and the government. |
| Standard (full-bodied) money | Money whose face value is equal to its intrinsic (metallic) value, for example an old gold coin. |
| Token money | Money whose face value is greater than its intrinsic value, for example present-day coins. |
| Legal tender money | Money that must be accepted in payment by law; it may be limited legal tender (accepted up to a limit, like small coins) or unlimited legal tender (accepted for any amount, like notes). |
| Optional (fiduciary) money | Instruments like cheques and drafts that are accepted by choice, not compulsion. |
| Fiat money | Money issued by government order (fiat) and backed by its authority, not by any metal. |
| Credit (bank) money | Demand deposits in banks that can be transferred by cheque. |
