Shat Karma = six cleansing kriyas: Neti (nose), Dhauti (food pipe), Nauli (abdomen), Basti (large intestine), Kapalbhati (respiratory), Trataka (eyes).

Shat Karma (shat = six, karma = action) are six yogic cleansing techniques that purify the body and remove impurities before pranayama and meditation.

  1. Neti — cleanses the nasal passages (Jala Neti with warm saline water, Sutra Neti with a soft thread). Benefit: clears the nose and sinuses, aids clear breathing and relieves congestion.
  2. Dhauti — cleanses the upper digestive tract / food pipe and stomach. Benefit: removes phlegm and toxins, improves digestion.
  3. Nauli — churning/massaging of the abdominal muscles and organs by isolating and rolling the abdominal recti. Benefit: tones the abdominal organs, stimulates digestion and improves bowel function.
  4. Basti — cleanses the lower abdomen / large intestine (a yogic form of colon cleansing). Benefit: relieves constipation and cleanses the bowels.
