Escape velocity is the minimum launch speed needed for a body to escape a planet's gravity permanently, found from ve=2GM/Rv_e = \sqrt{2GM/R} by requiring the body's total mechanical energy to be exactly zero.

Definition

Escape velocity is the minimum velocity with which a body must be projected vertically upward from the surface of a planet (or any massive body) so that it overcomes the gravitational pull of the planet and just escapes to infinity, arriving there with (at most) zero residual speed — i.e., it never returns.

Derivation (energy method)

Let a body of mass mm be projected from the surface of a planet of mass MM and radius RR, with speed vev_e.

Initial total energy (at the surface):

Ei=KE+PE=12mve2+(−GMmR)E_i = \text{KE} + \text{PE} = \frac{1}{2}mv_e^2 + \left(-\frac{GMm}{R}\right)

Final total energy (just reaching infinity, with the minimum condition that it arrives with zero velocity):

Ef=0+0=0E_f = 0 + 0 = 0

(since gravitational PE →0\to 0 as r→∞r \to \infty, and for the minimum escape speed the KE at infinity is taken as zero)
