Escape velocity is derived by setting the body's total mechanical energy at the surface equal to zero (just enough to reach infinity with zero residual speed): v_e = sqrt(2GM/R).

Definition: Escape velocity is the minimum velocity with which a body must be projected from the surface of a planet (or any massive body) so that it overcomes the gravitational pull and escapes to infinity, never to return, without any further propulsion.

Derivation: Consider a body of mass m projected from the surface of a planet of mass M and radius R with velocity v_e.

At the surface, total energy = Kinetic energy + Gravitational potential energy:

E_i = (1/2) m v_e^2 + (−GMm/R)

For the body to 'just escape' (reach infinity with zero final velocity, i.e. zero final KE, and PE = 0 at infinity), the final total energy is:

E_f = 0 + 0 = 0

By conservation of energy, E_i = E_f: …
