Inertia is a body's natural tendency to resist a change in its state of motion; the mass of the body is the quantitative measure of its inertia.

Definition of inertia

Inertia is the property of a material body by which it opposes any external attempt to change its state of rest or its state of uniform motion in a straight line. A body at rest tends to stay at rest, and a body in uniform motion tends to keep moving with the same velocity, unless acted upon by an unbalanced external force. This is essentially the content of Newton's First Law of Motion (the law of inertia).

Types of inertia (illustrative)

  • Inertia of rest — resistance to starting motion (e.g., a passenger jerks backward when a bus suddenly starts).
  • Inertia of motion — resistance to stopping motion (e.g., a passenger jerks forward when a moving bus suddenly stops).
  • Inertia of direction — resistance to a change in direction of motion (e.g., mud flies off a spinning wheel tangentially).
