Viscosity is the property of a fluid by virtue of which it opposes relative motion between its adjacent layers.

When a fluid flows, adjacent layers moving with different velocities experience an internal tangential (backward-dragging) force that opposes their relative motion — this property is called viscosity. It arises from intermolecular forces and momentum transfer between layers.

Newton's law of viscous flow gives the viscous force: F = η A (dv/dx), where η is the coefficient of viscosity, A is the area of contact, and dv/dx is the velocity gradient.

From this, η = F·dx / (A·dv).
