Newton's law of viscosity gives the viscous force between adjacent fluid layers, from which the coefficient of viscosity is defined.

Consider a fluid in streamline (laminar) flow over a fixed surface, moving in layers with velocity increasing with distance from the surface. Newton showed that the viscous (tangential) force FF between two adjacent layers of fluid is:

  1. directly proportional to the area of contact AA of the layers, and
  2. directly proportional to the velocity gradient dvdx\dfrac{dv}{dx} perpendicular to the flow (the rate of change of velocity with distance between the layers).

F∝Advdx  ⇒  F=ηAdvdxF \propto A\dfrac{dv}{dx} \;\Rightarrow\; F = \eta A\dfrac{dv}{dx}
