Strain = change in dimension / original dimension (dimensionless). Three types: longitudinal strain (ΔL/L), volume strain (ΔV/V), and shear strain (angle θ).

Definition of strain: When a deforming force acts on a body, its size or shape changes. Strain is defined as the ratio of the change in dimension of the body to its original dimension:

Strain = change in dimension / original dimension

Since it is a ratio of two like quantities, strain has no units and no dimensions.

Types of strain:

  1. Longitudinal strain (tensile/linear strain): produced when the deforming force changes the length of the body. It is defined as the ratio of the change in length to the original length:

    Longitudinal strain = ΔL / L

(Here the force acts normally, along the length.)

  2. Volume strain (bulk strain): produced when the deforming force (e.g. uniform pressure applied normally over the whole surface) changes the volume of the body. It is defined as the ratio of change in volume to original volume:

    Volume strain = ΔV / V
