Neither ball lands first — both hit the ground simultaneously, because horizontal and vertical motions are independent of each other.

A key principle of projectile motion is that the horizontal and vertical components of motion are completely independent of one another (they can be analysed separately).

Ball 1 (dropped vertically): Initial vertical velocity = 0. It falls under gravity alone.

h = (1/2) g t1^2 => t1 = root(2h/g)

Ball 2 (thrown horizontally with speed u): Its initial vertical velocity is ALSO zero (the velocity u given to it is purely horizontal); only gravity acts vertically on it too, exactly as on Ball 1. Its horizontal velocity u does not affect its vertical fall at all.

h = (1/2) g t2^2 => t2 = root(2h/g)
