With three equal distance segments at 10, 20 and 60 kmph, the mean speed = total distance / total time = 18 kmph (the harmonic-type average for equal distances).

Key idea: Mean speed is defined as the total distance travelled divided by the total time taken — NOT the simple average of the three speeds. Because equal distances (not equal times) are covered at each speed, we must add up the times.

Let the total distance be 3d, so each one-third of the distance = d.

  • Speed for first third, v₁ = 10 kmph ⟹ time t₁ = d/10
  • Speed for second third, v₂ = 20 kmph ⟹ time t₂ = d/20
  • Speed for last third, v₃ = 60 kmph ⟹ time t₃ = d/60

Total time:

t = d/10 + d/20 + d/60

Taking the LCM (60): …
