Turning a door needs torque, not just force; torque depends on the distance from the hinge (axis) at which the force is applied, and that distance is zero right at the hinge.

A door rotates about an axis passing through its hinges. The turning effect of a force is measured by torque, τ = r x F, whose magnitude is τ = rF sinθ, where r is the position vector from the axis (hinge) to the point of application of the force.
