Heat travels by conduction (through molecular collisions in a medium), convection (via bulk movement of a fluid), or radiation (via electromagnetic waves needing no medium at all).

Conduction

Conduction is the mode of heat transfer in which heat flows from a region of higher temperature to a region of lower temperature through a material medium, by the transfer of kinetic energy via collisions between neighbouring molecules/atoms (and free electrons, in metals), without any actual bulk movement of the medium itself.

Example: When one end of a metal rod is heated over a flame, the other end gradually becomes hot too, as heat conducts along the rod. Metals like copper and silver are good conductors; materials like wood, air, and wool are poor conductors (insulators).

Convection

Convection is the mode of heat transfer in which heat is carried from one place to another by the actual bulk movement of a heated fluid (liquid or gas) itself — the heated, less dense fluid rises and is replaced by cooler, denser fluid, setting up a convection current.

Example: Water in a pot heated from below — the hot water at the bottom rises while cooler water sinks to take its place, circulating until the whole pot is heated. Land and sea breezes, and the heating of a room by a room heater, are also convection.
