Conduction, convection and radiation are the three modes of heat transfer, distinguished by whether matter moves and whether a medium is needed.

Conduction: Heat is transferred from a region of higher temperature to a region of lower temperature through direct molecular collisions/vibrations, with no actual bulk movement of the material itself. It is the dominant mode of heat transfer in solids.

Example: When one end of a metal rod is heated, the other end gradually becomes hot as heat travels through the rod by conduction, even though the rod itself doesn't move.

Convection: Heat is transferred by the actual physical movement of heated particles of a fluid (liquid or gas) from one place to another, carrying thermal energy with them. It requires a fluid medium and can be natural (density-driven) or forced (e.g., by a fan/pump).

Example: Water in a pot heated from below — the hot water at the bottom rises (being less dense) and cooler water sinks to take its place, setting up convection currents that heat the whole pot. Land and sea breezes are a natural-world example.
